SLANT System® Advanced Training with Practicum
for Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist Certification
After successful completion of the Structured Literacy Foundations course, participants will be eligible to participate in Advanced Training with Practicum through 24 additional hours of seminars and 1:1 coaching. Topics for the seminars will include in-depth coverage of structured literacy techniques, written expression, spelling, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, morphology, progress monitoring, record keeping, and so much more.
Teachers will gain in-depth knowledge of all the language concepts, spelling rules, and letter/sound correspondences taught throughout all 7 Stages of the Slant System® Teaching Sequence. Seminars also afford participants the opportunity to ask questions about their specific students, their classroom settings, and to share and collaborate with their peers under the guidance of a master level trainer.
To qualify for Slant System® Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist Certification, each teacher must meet the instructional time requirements (minimum 60 contact hours using the 60 minute or 30 minute lesson plans) with the same group of students; demonstrate competency using the SLANT System® under the guidance of a coach; attend the entire Structured Literacy Foundations Course and all 24 hours of Advanced Training seminars; administer pre/post assessments; successfully complete all quizzes and a final exam; and follow the Slant® Principles of Professional Conduct.
Throughout the practicum, each participant will receive 4 coaching mentor visits. The practicum component of Slant® System Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist Certification provides extensive training and support enabling teachers to effectively implement instruction with integrity and fidelity. Each participant is required to work closely with at least 2 students or a small student group in his/her classroom under the mentorship of a Slant® Coach. Each participant will work with these students, at least 4 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes each session, or at least 2 times per week for a minimum of 60 minutes per session.
The practicum will run the length of the school year and will include at least 60 hours with these student groups. All participants will be required to keep lesson plans for each session with their students as well as pre and post practicum assessment data. The Slant® Coach will work with each participant to determine appropriate progress monitoring tools for his/her group of students. Each participant will be observed by a Slant® Coach during a full session with his/her student at least 4 times over the course of the practicum. These observations can take the form of teleconferencing visits using web-based internet video conferencing software. Following each observation, a 20-30 minute conference will be held with each participant and he/she will receive a written summary of his/her work.
• Throughout the practicum, participants will be able to:
• Individualize reading instruction for a small group of students
• Use the SLANT System® materials (included with registration)
• Plan and implement at least 60 lessons for the students over the course of one
school year, for total a minimum of 60 hours
• Adapt the implementation to meet their classroom time needs
During their course of study, teachers learn how to assess students for risk factors of dyslexia including assessment in the areas of phonological and phonemic awareness, rapid naming skills, alphabet knowledge, phonics, decoding skills, and encoding skills. Each teacher must assess at least two students and interpret the assessment results to determine if the student is appropriate for Slant® instruction. The assessment is then used as a guide to instructional planning. During the training year, teachers learn how to use student data to keep track of progress, as well as using the SLANT® Phonics Survey to monitor growth within the program.
As an accredited training program through the International Dyslexia Association, teachers who successfully complete the Slant System® Structured Literacy Foundations Course and Advanced Training seminars will qualify for the Knowledge and Practice Examination of Effective Reading Instruction (KPEERI) through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction leading to certification through CERI.
