The SLANT System® materials are designed to promote explicit and systematic instruction of the structure of the English language. This includes instruction in phoneme/grapheme correspondences, language concepts, spelling rules, and much more. |
The Program is divided into 7 Progressive Stages taking students from basic reading and spelling skills to advanced skills using Greek & Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
Each Stage includes a variety of materials to provide practice with new concepts in isolation (word lists, both real and nonsense) and in context. Decodable Reading passages include a variety of both narrative and expository styles. Reading passages are designed to give ample practice opportunities and appeal to a wide range of abilities and interests. SLANT System® materials also include graphic organizers and explicit comprehension questions designed to promote higher order thinking skills. These organizers and questions begin in Stage 3. |
